CREATIVITY IN GRAPHICS DESIGN : True Complexity seen as Simplicity

Graphics design

Graphic design, also known as communication design, is the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content.

The form of the communication can be physical or virtual and may include images, words, or graphic forms. The experience can take place in an instant or over a long period of time.

The work can happen at any scale, from the design of a single postage stamp to a national postal signage system, or from a company’s digital avatar to the sprawling and interlinked digital and physical content of an international newspaper.

It can also be for any purpose, whether commercial, educational, cultural, or political.

As a creative designer, I can’t but remember my early days of designing where somewhere in my head, graphics design was about pulling gradients, pumping in hues and every possible shape into my canvas.

As I got conversant with my then Photoshop 7 tools, I felt a need to infuse all of them into my designs.

The rookie in me was seeking expression and guess what? it actually got it (lol). I’m quite sure this narrative is the same for a large number of graphic designers.

Fast forward to few years after, the miracle happened. I stumbled upon an article that talked about the concept of minimalism. I was stunned.

I remember the author wrote about using a maximum of two to three fonts for a design.

I quickly did a scan of my port-failure (meant portfolio, lol) and discovered I was so guilty.

The content of that article brought a change to my career as a graphics guy.

In this upwardly mobile world where everyone is in a haste to nowhere, your design has to battle with several other things on the minds of your viewers such that the moment it doesn’t appeal to their eyes in seconds, it gets discarded.

A muddled up and clumsy design would definitely not help in this battle. It’s therefore wise to rid your project of unnecessary elements and make it as simple as possible.

Many erroneously think that when we say simple, we are discrediting creativity. Not at all! True complexity is seen is simplicity. The less is more!

What is the essence of having 5-7 fonts for one project? Why lens flare, strokes and multiple gradients? All these can be creatively used and should be! However, it must be neatly done if at all it has to be done.
